It never quite reaches the same level of fun or fluidity as The Messenger, but it sure does bring the difficulty one way or another. Overall, I definitely enjoyed most of my time with it, but those annoying sections combined with it's controls bring it down a bit. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea though, with the mid-game in particular being rough. The bosses are also reasonable for the most part. Outside of that though, there are mainly difficult but fair sections that are a ton of fun when mastered and is where the game is at it's best. While the art style is nice, there were a lot of times where traps and even enemies kind of blended in with the environment, making it hard to spot them with a lot going on. Afterward though, it definitely spikes up. The first couple of chapters actually feel fine in this regard as most of their obstacles are well presented.

Cyber shadow map trial#
I don't mind the difficulty, but there are a lot of things you won't see coming the first time, making the majority of it trial and error. Here's not to say that it was bad, but there are many points where it just throws you under the bus. I heard some people had to grind at points, but I never ran into this issue. I kind of just saw these as optional difficulty adjustments for each checkpoint and mostly ignored them until close to the end of the game or if an area or boss was really an annoyance. You have the option to where you can pay to activate additional benefits such as refilling SP or spawning a power up. The checkpoint system is also something that I found quite odd. Despite this, it was still the most satisfying ability to use even with the deaths it causes. It's also not super clear what things you can and can't parry. You can't parry when you have I-frames, so if you get hit from a failed parry and attempt to do so again, you'll more likely than not get hit again which can be annoying. The window to do so is maybe a little too small for my liking. The parry is the worst offender of this as you have to stop and move into a projectile which doesn't feel as fluid as it could. I personally didn't have much of a problem with most of the abilities being tied to directional attack inputs, but there definitely could've been some more buttons utilized.

Even with the full moveset, it can still be a bit awkward at times. It makes the first half feel pretty clunky and limited. A problem I had with this however is how long it takes to get them.

It does a good job of tailoring the levels with the abilities you obtain over the chapters, keeping it fresh throughout. This has pros and cons that I'll get to later. As you may know, it's intentionally designed to be in the vein of old school ninja gaiden and such, but a bit modernized.

I just find it kind of funny and interesting why this is the case, despite how good it is.Īnyways, on to the most important aspect: gameplay. However, I find it difficult to actually recall the majority of them outside of it. When you're playing the game, every song is a banger and matches the moment. I never thought I'd say this, but (bear with me here) the best forgettable soundtrack I've heard. The story, while not groundbreaking and a little cryptic at times, does it's job and is interesting enough. I'm not going to go over every aspect, but points that I feel the strongest about. After finishing it, it turned out to be exactly that. I didn't expect it to top it, but to be decently above average. That, and I was really looking forward to it after it was announced due to it's similarities with The Messenger which is still one of my favorite platformers and was hoping this would scratch that itch. I usually don't make these kinds of things, but I noticed there hasn't been as much discussion on it as I expected.
